Press Release

Date: 5 March, 2024

37th Annual Sports Days

Students and teachers of Queen’s College Old Boys’ Association Secondary School assembled at the Tsing Yi Sports Ground on an appreciably dry track for the 37th Annual Sports Days on 4th and 5th March, 2024. In a well-decorated opening ceremony, cheerleading squads duly waved the red, blue, yellow and green pom poms and flags of all four Houses, and student members of the Hong Kong Red Cross, Hong Kong Road Safety Association, Scout Association of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps uniformed groups marched proudly in rank and file to greet spectators in the stands.

Over the course of the two days, school spirit surged as the sounds of noise makers and house chants took to the air. Students of all forms showcased their sporting skills in a range of athletic events and engaged in healthy competition to win points for their Houses, while first aid trained student volunteers stood by, ready to assist their fellow students. Only minor injuries were reported. Congratulations are in order to Blue House for winning the 2023-2024 Annual Sports Days House Championship, having gained a total of 760 points, and also to Red House for winning the Best Cheerleading Team competition, with a total of 1,508 points.

Leading by example, retired former teacher of Visual Arts, Mr. Tang Kwok Wing, once again took his place at the starting line of the Men’s Open 3,000-Metre race. After bounding seven and a half rounds of the track, a well-deserved victory was clinched by Red House’s young champion runner, Form 2 student Jin En. It was a noteworthy effort that neared the existing record of 10:34.34 by 19 seconds. In another highlight, Physical Education teacher, Mr. Tse Po Ki, sprinted an incredible last leg of the 4X100 metre Student-Teacher relay race, securing a victory for their coed team.

In the closing ceremony, Principal Ronald Hui welcomed back this year’s Guest of Honour, Mr. Yung Chung Hui, former QCOBASS Principal of thirteen years. The purposeful reunion struck home, particularly among the Form 6 cohort, who had studied under Mr. Y. C. Hui’s principalship five years previously. To round off the Annual Sports Days, also the final day of school for the Form 6 before their public exam leave, attendees sang a heartwarming rendition of the school anthem: “Hail! Alma Mater! Glory to Q. C. O. B. A. Secondary School.” In parallel with the school song’s chorus, the special guest reminded the student body about the benefits of loyalty and commitment to their secondary school in his closing speech.
